Why Acupuncture

How acupuncture supports IVF success

Research from leading fertility clinics shows acupuncture can significantly improve IVF outcomes by addressing key biological factors.

↑ Blood Flow
Improved Uterine Circulation
Acupuncture increases blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, improving endometrial receptivity and supporting implantation.
⚖️ Hormones
Hormonal Regulation
Balances FSH, LH, AMH, and estrogen levels. Supports the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis for a more responsive cycle.
↓ Stress
Reduces Cortisol & Anxiety
High stress directly impairs IVF outcomes. Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic system, reducing cortisol and supporting implantation.
🥚 Quality
Egg & Embryo Quality
Regular pre-cycle acupuncture (3 months) improves mitochondrial function and blood supply to developing follicles.
🔄 Cycles
Menstrual Regulation
For irregular cycles, PCOS, or amenorrhea, acupuncture helps restore regular, predictable cycles before beginning IVF stimulation.
🧘
Overall Wellbeing
Fertility treatment is emotionally demanding. Acupuncture provides consistent emotional support, reducing anxiety and burnout throughout the process.
Treatment Protocol

Acupuncture timing around your IVF cycle

We coordinate with your fertility clinic to time sessions around each phase of your IVF cycle for maximum benefit.

Phase 1 — 1–3 Months Before
Pre-Cycle Preparation

Build a strong foundation. Improve egg quality, balance hormones (FSH, AMH, estrogen), thicken uterine lining, and reduce baseline stress. 1–2 sessions per week recommended.

Phase 2 — During Stimulation
Ovarian Stimulation Support

Support follicle growth and reduce stimulation side effects (bloating, mood changes). Improve ovarian blood flow for better egg development. Continue 1–2×/week.

Phase 3 — Transfer Day
Embryo Transfer Support

Sessions before and after embryo transfer are among the most impactful. Increase uterine blood flow, reduce uterine contractions, and calm the nervous system for optimal implantation conditions.

Phase 4 — Two-Week Wait
Post-Transfer & TWW

The most anxious period of IVF. Acupuncture reduces anxiety, supports implantation, and provides the emotional grounding you need during the two-week wait.

We coordinate with your fertility clinic
Let us know your cycle dates and we'll plan your sessions around them — at UCSF, Stanford, RBA, Laurel Fertility, or wherever you're being seen.

IVF Acupuncture FAQ

Questions about fertility acupuncture

Ideally 3 months before your IVF cycle begins. This allows time to improve egg quality, balance hormones, and optimize your uterine environment. However, even starting 4–6 weeks before can be beneficial.
During pre-cycle prep: 1–2 times per week. During stimulation: 1–2 times per week. Transfer day: once before and once after transfer. During the two-week wait: 1–2 sessions for support.
Multiple studies show that acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer can improve clinical pregnancy rates. Pre-cycle acupuncture has also been shown to improve egg quality and uterine receptivity. Results vary by individual.
Yes. Acupuncture performed by a licensed practitioner is safe during IVF. We use sterile, single-use needles and avoid any points contraindicated during stimulation or after transfer. We also coordinate with your fertility clinic.
Yes. Acupuncture effectively addresses PCOS by regulating menstrual cycles, reducing androgens, improving insulin sensitivity, and supporting ovulation — often without hormonal side effects.
Yes. We support IUI cycles just as we do IVF — with acupuncture timed around stimulation, the IUI procedure itself, and the two-week wait.
Yes. Dr. Bai is fully bilingual in English and Mandarin Chinese (中英文). Many of our fertility patients prefer to discuss sensitive health matters in Chinese, and we're delighted to accommodate that.
Coverage varies. Many plans that cover acupuncture for pain also cover it for fertility-related conditions. We verify your benefits for free before your first visit. Text your insurance card front and back to 925-425-8010.
